CHESTERFIELD Sofas & Armchairs by Lisa Whatmough from SQUINT LIMITED

The CHESTERFIELD Collection from SQUINT LIMITED is but a small part of the beautiful, colorful and hip creations of Founder-Owner-Designer & Creative Director Lisa Whatmough.

The CHESTERFIELD Collection sofas and armchairs can be ordered with or without feather seat cushions and are available in many color combinations. No two pieces are exactly the same, by the nature of the hand-stitched patchwork process. Fabrics used include woven silks, velvets as well as printed and woven cottons.

The specific Collection consists of the CHESTERFIELD Sofas (2-seaters, 3-seaters, corner sofas):

the ENGLISH CHESTERFIELD Sofas (2-seaters, 3-seaters):

and the CHESTERFIELD Armchairs:

SQUINT LIMITED was established in 2005 by Lisa Whatmough, a graduate of Winchester School of Art. At first, Lisa was mainly active as a painter and sculptor. A bit later, she discovered the art of restoring old furniture.

At the time, she lived in an old Victorian-style house in Hackney so, when she first started her occupation with transforming old furniture into works of art, she explains that she was working “literally from my living room, wrapping lamps and small pieces of furniture with patchworked antique textiles, which ended up in Liberty’s.”

That first showcasing of her creations in the windows of Liberty for London Fashion Week proved very successful, so she immediately opened her first shop in Hackney within 2005.

Nowadays, SQUINT LIMITED has evolved into a bespoke furnishings and accessories company that makes mostly made-to-order furniture, accessories, lamps, wallpapers and small decorative objects. Clients include Christian Louboutin, Mario Testino and Stella McCartney.

Each piece is produced and uniquely handcrafted in the UK from long-established independently owned family businesses to the highest standards of craftsmanship with an utmost attention to detail. All creations are covered with swatches of modern and vintage patchwork. This means that no two products are alike.

SQUINT LIMITED creations are currently available from their two London stores (Squint Limited Shoreditch & Squint Limited South Kensington) and from a number of high-end retailers in the UK and abroad such as Liberty, Harrods, Heal’s, Lane Crawford Hong Kong, Lane Crawford Beijing, Muse Tokyo & Bloomingdales Home-Dubai.

Especially the South Kensington store is a very distinctive space. It’s nicknamed “The Garage”, as it used to be a car park which was converted into a showroom for SQUINT LIMITED. Its ground floor features a large glass roof, which allows daylight to pass into the space, and the original tile wall which was painted white. The basement floor (lower ground) was left almost raw, with its original brick walls and naked piping, and was decorated with graffiti artwork by students of the University of the Arts London.

The company also ships internationally, so anyone interested can contact them directly for prices, delivery options and relevant costs. Furniture lead times run at between ten and twelve weeks and accessories six to eight weeks.

In the video that follows, Lisa Whatmough explains, in her own words, how she founded her Company and takes us on a tour in the colorful world of SQUINT LIMITED (video by Graham Atkins-Hughes):
