RUBICUBE (aka BEAU HAUS) Dining Chairs-Armchairs by Jean-Charles de Castelbajac from ACRILA
The RUBICUBE (also called BEAU HAUS) Dining Chairs-Armchairs, designed by Jean-Charles de Castelbajac and manufactured by French-based company ACRILA, remind us a lot of Piet Mondrian’s creations.
The Chairs are mono-block (i.e. no screws or adhesive bonding is used) and made of polymethyl-methacrylate in 15 mm thick sheets which are, subsequently, hand-folded (PMMA is a transparent and resistant thermoplastic material that is traded under various trade names such as Plexiglass, Perspex , Altuglass, Lucite , Acrylic etc.).
Each side of a chair has a different color (4 colors in total: red, yellow, green, blue) imprinted on the back of the acrylic glass by Digital Laser Printing. The whole process is so precise that it takes hours just to make one of these chairs.
The RUBICUBE (aka BEAU HAUS) Dining Chairs-Armchairs form part of a wider Collection of furniture designed by world famous fashion designer Jean-Charles de Castelbajac and presented by ACRILA in 2008 for the first time (please see other creations of the same Collection presented in our relevant posts).
On his co-operation with ACRILA, says the designer: “I envision the house as a stage, a setting in motion where actors are the chairs. To write this piece , I wanted a quality director; I found Acrila. Toc, toc, toc, the curtain will rise“.
Jean-Charles de Castelbajac, the world-famous fashion designer also known as JCDC, was born on 28 November 1949 in Casablanca, Morocco and started designing clothing at the age of 20 while, later on, he also ventured into the area of home furnishings design.
Iconoclastic and avant-garde with a flair for Pop-Art, he has a very natural way of mixing fashion with art to produce colorful and fun designs and, in this process, he has collaborated with artists such as Combas, Ben Loulou Picasso, Garouste, Hervé Di Rosa, Keith Haring and Jean- Michel Basquiat, to name but a few.
ACRILA was founded in 2007 by designer Jean-Christophe Bernard and his wife Isabelle Bernard and produces attractive and unusual modern lines of decorative furnishings for both commercial and residential use. The headquarters of the Company are in Paris, France while its workshop is situated in Pessac (near Bordeaux, France).
Products include dining chairs, lounge chairs, dining tables, console tables, end tables, lamps, adjustable bar stools as well as decorative and other items. In December 2011, the duo launched a new collection of oversized, light, fun and fashionable transparent jewelry in acrylic glass in collaboration with SWAROVSKI ELEMENTS.
